Selecting a Material

Identify the environment requirements

1. What is the temperature range that this part will be subjected to?
2. Are these temperatures consistent or intermittent?
3. Is this an environmental seal or a fluid seal?
4. What types of chemicals, gases, oils or fuels will this part be in contact with?

   Identify the physical requirements

5. Will this part be subjected to cycles of compression, e.g. door gasket?
6. How much force/impact will this part receive?
7. Will this material need flexing, tear strength or abrasion resistance?
8. Does this material need to meet any agency criteria, e.g. ASTM, Mil-spec, FDA?
