Molded rubber bumpers for automotive applications are another example of the varied uses of molded rubber products. Molded rubber bumpers are molded rubber parts that are used to dampen force or isolate vehicle parts from each other to reduce or eliminate friction. Used extensively in vehicles of all types and sizes, molded rubber bumpers can reduce wear and tear on body parts and increase the durability of vehicle components.
There are essentially three types of molded rubber bumpers. Catch bumpers are used to cushion force and vibration. Catch bumpers are so-called because the catch-end of the bumper is inserted into an appropriately-sized hole, thereby holding the bumper firmly in place. Catch bumpers are used to in door frames to cushion the force of the door in closing, or in other surfaces where forces and vibration need to be cushioned and reduced.
Recessed bumpers are used to dampen shocks and transmission of vibration. Often used as the feet in equipment and parts, these molded rubber bumpers can be manufactured from a variety of rubber compounds, including EPDM, Neoprene, Silicone, and others.
Stem bumpers fulfill essentially the same function as catch bumpers. The stem of the bumper is inserted into a pre-drilled hole, thereby creating a compression fit. Like other molded rubber bumpers, stem bumpers are used to provide protection from shocks and forces. They can also be used as spacers to separate various vehicle components and assemblies.
