Extruded Seals for Vehicle Doors, Windows, Hoods, Trunks, etc.
Extruded automotive seals are a key component of the vehicle. These seals keep moisture, dirt, air and noise out of the vehicle cabin, while helping to maintain the interior vehicle temperature.
Extruded seals differ from molded seals in that the seals are produced using a different manufacturing process. Unlike molded rubber products, extruded seals are produced when uncured EPDM rubber is forced through a die of the desired cross-section under pressure. The resulting product is then vulcanized or cured, usually in an salt bath, microwave, or autoclave. Extruded parts can be made in various sizes, ranging from 1/8" in diameter to rectangular cross-sections of up to 6" by 12", and in continuous lengths of up to a thousand feet or more.
Automotive seals can also be manufactured using a co-extrusion process. Co-extrusion is the process of pressing two or more materials through the same die to produce a single piece. When multiple rubbers are combined in co-extrusion, the resulting material can possess properties that are quite different from those of a single material. Co-extrusion has opened up new frontiers in material engineering and addressed several previously difficult manufacturing needs.
Besides being used on vehicle doors, extruded automotive seals can also be used on vehicle hoods, trunks, and windows. When sourcing extruded automotive seals, it is important not only to consider the material specifications and requirements, but also how well the final product will fit on the vehicle.
Functional parameters that should be considered for extruded automotive seals are that of securing an easy fit onto the door sash, while maintaining a high retention force after fitting, together with allowing a suitable level of force needed to close the door. Product design parameters, such as compression load deflection force, insertion and retention force, reflect these factors.
As a leading supplier to some of the world's top automakers, Canada Rubber Group Inc. has provided extruded seals to a number of vehicle programs. We can supply seals made under both extrusion and co-extrusion manufacturing processes. We can also provide value-added features to the base product which ease installation of the seal at the vehicle assembly plant. For example, we have produced co-extruded door seals with pins in place which operators can snap-on fit to the door sash right at lineside.
In addition to extruded seals, we have supplied a wide variety of extruded and molded rubber products for both industrial and automotive applications. Automakers we have supplied automotive rubber parts to include General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Mazda, BMW, Honda, Toyota, and Volvo. Parts that we have supplied include gaskets and seals, pedal pads, isolators and dampers, plenum plugs, grommets, and kiss-cut anti-vibration pads.
All aspects of our operations conform to the ISO 9001:2008 standard. We supply automotive rubber products which meet ASTM D2000 line call-outs, as well as the material specifications of major OEM’s, including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Mazda, BMW, Honda, Toyota, and Volvo. In those cases where a new specification is required, we work with our partners to develop an appropriate solution.
