Anti-Microbial Silicone Rubber

Anti-microbial gaskets, seals, sleeves and tubing from neutraSil™ silicone rubber

Food processing operations are highly regulated environments where mitigating the risks of contamination resulting from microbes is a real concern. In particular, food processing lines can be at risk for harboring unwanted organisms in the nooks, crannies and crevices of equipment and machinery.

To mitigate the risk of contamination in food processing lines, it is critical to use gaskets and seals on equipment that is fabricated from anti-microbial rubber. In these environments, anti-microbial silicone rubber is the preferred material choice.

Silicone rubbers, also known as polydimethylsiloxane rubbers, have been used in a wide range of anti-microbial applications since being introduced to the market more than 60 years ago.

Silicone rubbers resist water and many chemicals, including acids, oxidizing chemicals, ammonia and isopropyl alcohol. In comparison with polyurethanes, silicone rubbers are clearer and more stable over a wide range of temperatures. The material also has a lower compression set and results in softer compounds. A further advantage for food processors is that silicone rubber is sanitation-friendly, meaning that it will stand up to frequent equipment washdowns.

Silver-based silicone rubbers are an excellent choice for food processing applications. To service our food processing customers, Canada Rubber Group Inc. (CRGI) supplies gaskets, seals, and other rubber products fashioned from neutraSil™ anti-microbial rubber. A proven ‘silver’ technology is at the core of neutraSil™ silicone rubber. neutraSil™ silicone rubber works by releasing a stream of silver ions, inhibiting the growth of bacterial cells by disabling their proton pumps. This interferes with the proteins required for cellular functioning and disrupts cell wall synthesis. The physical and environmental properties of neutraSil™ make it suitable for use in a range of demanding environments where anti-microbial protection is a requirement.

NeutraSil™ has been independently proven to inhibit the growth of MRSA, E. Coli and Salmonella. With silver-ion technology at its core, the growth of bacterial cells are broken down and prohibited to populate. This ensures the highest levels of safety where neutraSil™ is applied. Other benefits of NeutraSil™ include:

  • Tasteless

  • Odourless

  • Non-toxic

  • Non-leaching

  • Non corrosive

  • FDA approved
