Chlorinated Water Service Gaskets

Gaskets from NSF/ANSI 61 certified materials for chlorinated water service

A question we are sometimes asked is, “What types of gaskets are suitable for chlorinated water service?” Chlorinated water service gaskets are often used in water treatment facilities, water distribution systems and equipment (such as meters and plumbing devic es), as well as finding numerous application in both industrial and household uses.

Chlorinated water service gaskets must be capable of withstanding attack from the chlorine compounds added to water during its treatment. Additionally, with the adoption of the NSF/ANSI 61 standard, which sets limits for the amount of chemicals permitted to leach into drinking water from the materials used in water transmission and distribution, users must now be concerned with achieving and maintaining compliance to this standard where required.

In water treatment facilities, water may be either chlorinated or chloraminated. In the former process, chlorine is added to water for disinfection purposes, while in the latter process both chlorine and ammonia are added. Both methods have widespread use in the treatment and purification of water. From a sealing perspective, what is important to note is that chloramines attack rubber compounds more aggressively than equivalent concentrations of free chlorine.

Choosing NSF/ANSI 61 gaskets

Choosing chlorinated water service gaskets means choosing gaskets that are fabricated from elastomers which stand up well to attack from chlorines and chloramines. Additionally, by choosing gaskets fabricated from NSF 61 certified materials, users can reduce the amount of chemicals that may leach into water from the gasket itself.

Canada Rubber Group Inc. (CRGI) can supply chlorinated water service gaskets fabricated from sheets manufactured by Teadit (NA1082SAN) and American Biltrite (NSF/ANSI 61 EPDM). Both of these sheets are certified to NSF/ANSI 61. These sheets work well in chlorinated water service applications and ensure that any chemical leaching is well within the limits specified by NSF 61.

Chlorinated water service gaskets that we produce from these NSF/ANSI 61 sheets are manufactured on the latest equipment, to customer requirements and specifications. If required, CRGI can provide sample parts of our NSF/ANSI compounds through our through our Rapid Prototyping Program, and emergency service is available on all orders.
