At Canada Rubber Group Inc. (CRGI), fuel tank cushions are a rubber part we are sometimes asked to supply to vehicle programs.
Fuel tank cushions are an example of what are commonly called NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) parts. NVH parts are used to reduce the noise and vibration experienced in a vehicle. Vehicle noise can arise from a variety of sources and NVH parts address these noise sources by interrupting, absorbing, or reducing the sources of noise. Typically, an NVH part consists of a molded or formed rubber part which performs the noise reduction function.
About fuel tank cushions
Fuel tank cushions are used in automotive vehicle manufacture to isolate the vehicle fuel tank from the supporting straps which affix the tank to the vehicle body. The fuel tank cushion often consists of an extrusion strip of EPDM rubber that is affixed onto the straps which secure the fuel tank onto the vehicle body, thus isolating the fuel tank from its supporting carriers.
OEM companies also use rubber die cut pads that are affixed to mounting brackets using a pressure sensitive adhesive to bond to the metal. The mounting brackets attach the fuel tank to the vehicle. Once in place, the fuel tank cushion prevents the fuel tank from abrading on the mounting brackets, preventing unnecessary wear and noise.
