Automotive Rubber Edge Trim Seals

As a leading supplier to many vehicle and transportation OEM’s and their Tier 1-3 suppliers, Canada Rubber Group (CRG) is often asked to service programs and projects with rubber edge trim seals. These products encompass a variety of material types and product designs, and result in effective and durable sealing solutions.

Our automotive rubber edge trim seals generally fall into the following two categories:

  • Trim seals

  • Edge trim

Trim seals are usually used to provide effective seals around windows, doors, hoods and trunks, hatches, etc. These products are the ideal solution for providing weatherproof seals that are impervious to the elements and degradation from ozone and UV light. CRG has provided custom molded and extruded trim seals to many vehicle programs of leading OEM’s.

A commonly used type of trim seal is a bulb seal. This type of product is often used to provide seals on vehicle windows. Consisting of a retainer section of harder rubber and a flexible bulb of softer rubber, bulb seals offer excellent resistance to water, sunlight, and ozone.

Edge trim is generally used to provide a protective and decorative finish to edges in vehicle interiors and external panels.  Edge trim is available in a variety of materials, including fire retardant materials, and custom produced to the needs of a specific vehicle program.

No matter whether it is a simple bulb trim seal, or custom manufactured edge trim, CRG can supply a wide range of profiles and materials to suit your application needs.

Materials we often use in the manufacture of trim seals and edge trim are EPDM, TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomers), and silicone rubber. EPDM is a synthetic rubber that withstands temperature extremes and exhibits excellent resistance to UV light. Fire-resistant grades of EPDM are also available. TPE materials combine the best properties of rubber and thermoplastics. While parts made from TPE do not recover as well from heat and compression, they do offer excellent flexibility and resistance to weathering and ozone. Silicone rubber is a preferred material choice for automotive edge trim seals where low toxicity and reactivity to chemicals are required.

With over 25 years experience in serving the automotive industry, CRG understands how to add value for our automotive customers. Value-adding services that CRG can provide for automotive rubber edge trim seals include supporting the product development process with testing, proving and prototyping, supplying kanban quantities, and inventory warehouse management to support JIT delivery. In every project, we offer material selection guidance, parts prototyping and PPAP, CAD drawing support, EDI, bar coding, and global logistics management.

Many of the world’s leading automakers, including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz, rely upon CRG to supply their automotive rubber needs.
