Gaskets for Sealing at High Temperatures

Sealing at high temperatures (i.e. those above 400°C) can be challenging because standard gasket materials often breakdown after prolonged exposure to such conditions. The extended stress of high heat operations causes oxidation of the gasket material, leading to gasket failure and leaks and breakdowns.

High temperature applications include those seen in the chemical and agrichemical, petrochemical, energy, and resource extraction industries. Examples of high temperature applications include hydrocracking and fluid catalytic cracking, fertilizer production, manufacture and processing of hot oils, saturated steam, steam and gas turbines, exhaust systems and fuel cells. In these types of applications, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause standard gaskets, and even those made from flexible graphite, to oxidize and break down.

Gaskets for Sealing at High Temperatures: GR1700 APX2 Hochdruck® Sheet

To service high temperature applications, Canada Rubber Group (CRG) can supply gaskets made from Teadit® GR1700 – SIGRAFLEX® APX2 Hochdruck® sheet.

Teadit® GR1700 APX2 Hochdruck® sheet is specifically designed for high temperature flat gasket applications. This sheet combines the outstanding weight loss characteristics of SIGRAFLEX® APX2 flexible graphite and reinforcing layers of metal in SIGRAFLEX® Hochdruck® technology.

Gaskets made GR1700 APX2 Hochdruck® sheet perform well in critical applications due to the high mechanical strength and blowout resistance, working pressure resistance up to 3600 psi (250 bar), excellent chemical resistance, very low cold or hot relaxation, and a maximum permissible gasket stress. These gaskets exhibit good conformation to sealing surfaces, excellent torque retention and high sealability.

The thermal stability of SIGRAFLEX® APX2 is superior to that of standard grades of graphite foil. This is reflected by the material’s mass-loss curve, whose temperatures for any given mass-loss are about 150°C higher.

Gaskets fabricated from Teadit® GR1700 sheet are suitable for sealing in high temperature applications where the maximum temperature does not exceed 650°C, and where the continuous maximum temperature does not exceed 510°C. For specific material properties, please see the table below

CRG gaskets for sealing at high temperatures made from GR1700 APX2 Hochdruck® sheet are commonly used in pipe flanges, equipment and pressure vessels; non-typical geometry flanges tongue/groove and heat exchanger flanges. These gaskets are also suitable for use in sight glass, pumps, fittings and valves, etc.

Using the latest production technology, CRG can supply gaskets for sealing at high temperatures made from GR1700 APX2 Hochdruck® sheet in a variety of sizes and styles.
